I am honored to lead the Resources Division at LifeWay and serve with a team of leaders who are passionate to serve the Church in Her mission of making disciples. Each Wednesday, I share the heart behind one of the resources our team has developed and give an opportunity for you to register to win a free copy of the resource.
This week’s resource is The Apologetics Study Bible for Students, edited by Dr. Sean McDowell who is a gifted communicator with a passion for equipping the church, and in particular young people, to make the case for the Christian faith. Sean is an Assistant Professor in the Christian Apologetics program at Biola and is also a father, husband, high school teacher, speaker, and author having written, co-written, or edited 18 books. Below are some of his thoughts on this great resource.
Why does God allow evil? If God made the universe, then who made God? How can Christians say that Jesus is the only way to God?
These are just a sampling of some of the tough questions being asked today by both Christians and non-Christians, and by the students in our student ministries. Thankfully we don’t have to run from the hard questions or teach our students to run from them either. Instead, we can teach them to run to Jesus and His Word.
The Apostle Peter commands Christians to be prepared to offer good reasons for their hope: “But honor the Messiah as Lord in your hearts. Always be ready to give a defense [apology] to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you” (1Pt 3:15).
That is the purpose of The Apologetics Study Bible for Students. Our goal is to put a tool into your hands that will help you find answers to some of the toughest questions about God, science, ethics, world religions, and Christian living. The contributors for this book were carefully selected not only because they can articulately defend the Christian faith, but because they are practitioners as well.
The Study Bible features:
- Articles—Addressing 120 of the most commonly asked questions about the Christian faith.
- Twisted Scriptures—Sixty of the Bible passages most commonly distorted are explored.
- Bones & Dirt—Key archaeological finds highlighted.
- Challenges & Tactics—Preparing the reader to handle the most common challenges to Christianity.
- Personal Stories—From some of the great defenders of the Christian faith, as well as some people just like you.
- Fast Facts—Twenty of the most important apologetics topics are put into accessible bullet-point lists.
The point of apologetics is not to win an argument but to win a person to Christ. It is possible to win an argument and yet do it in a way that damages the cause of Christ. If we make a great argument, but we don’t do it in love, then it profits us nothing (1Co 13:1-3). We must follow the example of Jesus and be full of both grace and truth (Jn 1:14). This is why the ultimate apologetic is not a well-reasoned argument but a life that exemplifies the love of Christ. The way we live often speaks more loudly than our words.
