I am honored to lead the Resources Division at LifeWay and serve with a team of leaders who are passionate to serve the Church in Her mission of making disciples. Each Wednesday, I share the heart behind one of the resources our team has developed and give an opportunity for you to register to win a free copy of the resource. This week’s resource is God Delivers, the winter study for The Gospel Project for Adults, Students, and Kids.
The Gospel Project is a gospel-centered Bible study for all ages that dives deep into the things of God, lifts up Jesus, focuses on the grand story of Scripture, and drives participants to be on mission. Today, I want you to hear about this important study, which continues The Gospel Project’s three-year journey through the storyline of Scripture, taking participants chronologically through the books of Exodus through Deuteronomy, and to hear why we need to study books we’re tempted to skip.
There are some passages and books of the Bible that we all love. They’re the ones we gravitate to most naturally, the ones that offer us great encouragement, inspire us, and fill us with hope. The ones we can’t wait to get to during our personal study and family devotions. But, chances are, Leviticus probably isn’t among those.
It’s hard for many of us to see how a book like this one matters to us today. After all, it is filled with detailed commands about what to eat and wear, how and when to work, and every other area of life you can imagine. But Leviticus, and Exodus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy along with it, have a great deal to offer us as Christians because they teach us of God’s redemptive and holy nature:
- We learn that God is the Redeemer, the One who rescues His people from bondage in Egypt through Moses.
- We learn that God is the Lawgiver, the One who has determined the standards of what it means to be holy in His eyes.
- We learn of the consequences for disobedience and discover the curse of the Law that weighs heavily on all of us.
Most importantly, we discover the wondrous compassion and mercy of Yahweh, “a compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger and rich in faithful love and truth, maintaining faithful love to a thousand generations, forgiving wrongdoing, rebellion, and sin” (Exodus 34:6-7). In redeeming His people from slavery and giving us the Law, Yahweh was also preparing us for the coming of Jesus Christ, who redeems us from slavery to sin and takes the curse that belongs to law-breakers like us so we can enjoy the blessing that comes from His law-keeping.
All of this—and so much more—is in the books we too often overlook. And in this volume of The Gospel Project, it is our hope that adults, students, and children will discover these truths, and find new reason to marvel at the books we’re tempted to neglect.
