I am honored to lead the Resources Division at LifeWay and serve with a team of leaders who are passionate to serve the Church in Her mission of making disciples. Each Wednesday, I share the heart behind one of the resources our team has developed and give an opportunity for you to register to win a free copy of the resource. This week’s resource is Explore the Bible: Kids Fall 2016 digital download (Our Explore the Bible team helped with this post).
As another school year is beginning, it is a tangible reminder of how fast time is going by. My kids are growing up so fast. The kids in our homes and in our churches grow up so quickly, and we have such a brief time to influence and mold them during these years when they are so impressionable.
We have only a limited window of time to disciple these children. One lifetime and 66 books in our Bibles! Thankfully, we can rely on the wisdom and truth of God.
So how can we make the most of the days we have until our current children are standing in front of our churches in their caps and gowns announcing their college plans? Let’s take this year’s new first-graders, the class of 2028, and calculate how much Scripture we could teach until the day they are shopping for dorm room furniture instead of cartoon-character-blazoned lunchboxes.
If your church’s first-graders start school on August 14, 2016, and graduate on May 5, 2028:
They will have had the opportunity to attend church on 611 Sundays.
That is 611 opportunities your church’s Sunday morning volunteers have to share and illustrate Scripture with them. Do you have a plan to maximize these limited and sacred opportunities?
Your church’s annual calendar will have cycled through 12 times.
As examples, the class of 2028 has only 6 more Vacation Bible Schools, 6 more summer Kids camps, 12 more Christmas services, and 12 more Easter Sundays until they may move away to college. Are you planning to take advantage of each of these incredible opportunities to bring the gospel to the hearts of kids?
Parents have 4,281 days to get them ready for what is next.
Are you equipping parents to disciple their children in accordance with what everyone is learning together at church?
The encouraging news is that there is enough time in these 4,281 days to bring the class of 2028 book-by-book through the Bible multiple times in ways appropriate for their age levels as they progress through your ministry. And we are excited about a resource designed to help you do it. Explore the Bible: Kids brings kids and their families book-by-book through the Bible—helping them understand Scripture in its context and helping them obey it in today’s context.
