I am honored to lead the Resources Division at LifeWay and serve with a team of leaders who are passionate to serve the Church in her mission of making disciples. Each Wednesday, I share the heart behind one of the resources our team has developed and give an opportunity for you to register to win a free copy of the resource. This week’s resource is Fuge Camps and you have the opportunity to register for one free camp registration at the end of the post. Our Students team helped with this post.
Summer camp can be one of the most impactful events that a student can attend. There is nothing like getting students away from the pressure of their surroundings to focus on the worship and leadership of Jesus. Camp can also be one of the events that gets passed over because of so many other demands that summer brings. While we as ministers see the spiritual implications of attending camp, many times parents cannot see those in the midst of what looks like an overcrowded calendar. Let’s look at two ways we can help parents view camp in such a way that it is no longer a burden but a blessing.
1. Help parents see how camp fits into your strategy for making disciples.
Parents are bombarded with a lot of travel opportunities in the summer. Travel sports team, sports camps, and academic camps all take a piece of the calendar. While all of these events are important, opportunities for focused spiritual growth are often at the bottom of the list. Parents see the importance of those other events in the developmental process of their student, so help parents understand the importance of summer camp in the spiritual development of their student. As student ministers, we need to be able to articulate why it is that we want students to go to camp and what benefit it will have on their spiritual development.
2. Give parents plenty of time to plan.
Many parents want their students to go to camp, but they find themselves struggling with the financial obligations of sending not just one but maybe three students to camp! Minister to your parents and plan. If you will begin planning camp the moment you get back from the previous camp, you can give your parents an entire year to get ready. Spread your deposit schedule out over time so that parents can make payments for camp.
Summer camp can become a great tool to see your students grow closer to Jesus. Make sure that you are doing everything you can to help moms and dads get their students to camp. It will be a blessing to you as you see students come to know Jesus and grow in His grace, and you will experience the joy that parents receive when they are able to send their students to camp.
