I am honored to lead the Resources Division at LifeWay and serve with a team of leaders who are passionate to serve the Church in her mission of making disciples. Each Wednesday, I share the heart behind one of the resources our team has developed and give an opportunity for you to register to win a free copy of the resource. This week’s resource is The Main Event, LifeWay’s Conference for Men. Our Adult team helped write this post.
Pastor Johnny Hunt says, “Men are the untapped reservoir of spiritual energy for the Kingdom of God.” When the men are spiritually healthy, generally speaking the family and the church will be spiritually healthy. In Exodus 34, when God is establishing rhythms for His people, He declares that the men will appear before the Lord God three times a year (v. 23). He was placing significant responsibility on the men to guide their families and the people. While this text should not be used to argue that men should go to conferences or men’s nights a certain number of times each year, it does remind us of the importance of ministry to men. Men should be encouraged, equipped, and exhorted.
1. Men need to be Encouraged
I recently hosted an Online Bible Study of my new resource for men entitled Unfolded: The Story of God. As I interacted with the participants online a common theme seemed to emerge: many men seem to feel like they don’t have what it takes. Men feel the weight of pressures in almost every area of their lives from performing at work, to loving their wives and shepherding their kids well, to volunteering at church. Men need a time to refresh, recharge, and be reminded that other men are struggling with the same things and the good news of the gospel is that though we are weak, Christ is strong.
2. Men need to be Equipped
Kris Dolberry, LifeWay’s Men’s Ministry Specialist speaks with hundreds of men’s ministry leaders from around the country each year. One of the most common frustrations he hears from leaders of men’s ministry is that it is difficult to get men to engage in Bible study. The reality is that if a man can’t win, he doesn’t want to play. Often men won’t participate in Bible studies because they don’t know the Bible as well as they think they should and they fear being found out.
3. Men need to be Exhorted
Most men appreciate direct talk. From time to time, we men need someone to get in our face and just tell us the truth, good or bad, in a language we understand.
Men’s conferences like the Main Event are a place for men to put that fear aside and be encouraged, equipped, and exhorted by trustworthy and practical Bible teachers such as my friends J. D. Greear, Robby Gallaty, Russell Moore, and others. In the closing chapter of Romans, Paul says, “your obedience has been made known to all men.” My prayer for you and the men in your church is that this is the kind of reputation that would be associated with you. We believe The Main Event can help.
