I am honored to lead the Resources Division at LifeWay and serve with a team of leaders who are passionate to serve the Church in Her mission of making disciples. Each Wednesday, I share the heart behind one of the resources our team has developed and give an opportunity for you to register to win a free copy of the resource. This week’s resource is a WORDsearch 11 Library that includes Experiencing God Day by Day, Beth Moore’s Day by Day, Every Day with Jesus, According to Your Word, and A Word for the Day (Hebrew & Greek). Our WORDsearch team helped write this post.
Every research study we (LifeWay) have conducted about spiritual maturation reveals that the single biggest influence on spiritual growth is reading the Bible. Letting the Word of Christ dwell richly among us transforms us. Not spending time in God’s Word stagnates our spiritual growth. Many struggle to read the Scripture consistently. It can be hard to start and the temptation to give up is strong.
Bible reading plans can help provide a starting point and a clear course of action. Here are 5 reasons to use a Bible reading plan to help you stay consistent in your engagement with the Bible.
It can be easy to skip a day or two of reading the Bible and then suddenly a month has gone by without even cracking it open. Having a plan that guides you every day can provide motivation and an attainable daily goal.
2. Spiritual Discipline
Trying to start reading the whole Bible can feel overwhelming, but reading God’s Word is a spiritual discipline that God uses to conform us to His image. Some parts of the Bible are tougher to get through, but creating habits and following a plan helps work through these consistently. First Timothy 4:8 says, “The training of the body has limited benefit, but godliness is beneficial in every way, since it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come.”
3. Stronger Prayer Life
By following a Bible reading plan daily, you will learn more about how people in the Bible prayed. Learning about God’s character through their prayers and how He responds can help us be more honest with God and have a stronger prayer life. Praying through the Psalms or even Lamentations can give you words when you aren’t sure what to pray.
4. Spiritual Growth
God continually transforms us by His Spirit within us, and the Holy Spirit speaks through the Word. A Bible reading plan works for our spiritual health the way a diet and exercise plan work for our physical health—we see the transformation and growth by sticking with it consistently.
Daily Bible reading with a prayerful spirit is a way to connect with Jesus. Consider how Christ made intentional daily efforts to spend time with the Father and how He resisted temptation by quoting Scripture. The more we spend time in God’s Word, the more we are attuned to His voice in our lives and the more our hearts resemble Jesus.
